CGRU ORGANIZATION updated: 02/17/2022

We believe art is not a business but a social good in itself. Most Artists do not make art for personal profit and enrichment, and yet due to the lack of financial and legal instruments, must refer to themselves as "businesses" or "entrepreneurs".

The fact is, the vast majority of Artists LOSE money on their craft and struggle to pay rent and just survive. To the extent possible, we want to allow Artists to operate as non-profits.

Artists can work with CGRU by donating the proceeds of their creative work to the 501(c)(3), and receive a tax liability offset for their contributions. The CGRU Fund is used by Team members in a Mutual Aid model to give hardship grants and sponsorships to artists (members or not).

The specifics of how this all works are handled on a case by case basis. CGRU is a new experiment but we hope to grow and have more standardized practices.

CGRU uses OpenCollective to hold funds in the 501(c)(3) account of the OpenCollective Foundation. Funding is contributed by Team Members, Donors, anyone who believes in our cause.
